LIRR Digest – June 4, 2015

Hello ministers of reconciliation,

It has been quite a week in Ottawa – I am heading to Edmonton shortly, but wanted to send you some links to coverage of the walks of reconciliation, the TRC final report and calls to action, and responses to the calls to action, as well as the planting of the Heart Garden.

  • The Walk of Reconciliation on May 31  More like 7,000-10,000 walkers.  Many UC walkers were noticeable, thanks to 2 Toronto Conference bus loads.

We had a great send-off from a worship service at Dominion Chalmers UC.  Preacher Maggie McLeod, Executive Minister, Aboriginal Ministries Circle, reflecting on the story of Nicodemus, asked us to remember and hold onto those moments in which we glimpsed reconciliation on the journey, to encourage us when the road got rocky. http://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/more-than-3000-make-the-reconciliation-march-from-gatineau-to-ottawa-city-hall

  • The Churches Response to the TRC
  • On behalf of the Anglican Church, the Presbyterian Church, the United Church, and the many Roman Catholic entities,  Anglican Primate Fred Hiltz delivered a joint response to the TRC findings and calls to action.  Moderator Gary Patterson was present on stage with the  Primate as were the other denominational leaders. You can find it on the Anglican website.  Archibishop Gerrard Pettipas spoken additional words on behalf of the more than 50 Roman Catholic entities that were party to the Settlement Agreement. http://www.anglican.ca/relationships/trc/response-of-the-churches-to-the-truth-and-reconciliation-commission-of-canada
  • Closing ceremony and Heart Garden at Rideau Hall  ANCC Leading Elder and survivor of File Hills,  Lorna Standingready is pictured.  Other UCC representatives at the closing ceremony were Moderator Gary Paterson,  Aboriginal Ministries Council Chair and survivor Ray Jones, General Secretary Nora Sanders,  Past Moderator Mardi Tindal, General Council Officer: Residential Schools Jamie Scott; and Special Advisor: Residential Schools David MacDonald.  http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/education-only-way-forward-says-gov-gen-david-johnston-as-trc-ends-1.3098297
