Living into Right Relations: Take Action – Solidarity with Standing Rock

Dear Friends,

Tomorrow is an important moment for the people of Standing Rock, and all who are in solidarity with them as they continue to assert their struggle to protect the land and the water from the impacts of the proposed Dakota Access pipeline.  In doing so, they are also asserting their right to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) under the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Moderator Jordan Cantwell has recently reminded the church that solidarity actions such as this are a tangible way that we can live our commitment to the UN Declaration.   Activists such as Daniel T’seleie are doing just that.

Now, at the request of local Episcopal clergy, clergy from across North America, including a delegation from our full-communion partner the United Church of Christ, and Canada’s National Indigenous Anglican Bishop, Mark MacDonald, are gathering at Standing Rock from Nov 2 to 4 “to stand witness to water protectors’ acts of compassion for God’s creation, and to the transformative power of God’s love to make a way out of no way.”

In response, our ecumenical partner KAIROS is calling us to a moment of prayer on Thursday, November 3, at 10:00 AM in your time zone.  Please visit the KAIROS website for this prayer and other ideas for action.

In addition to this act, we ask also that you reflect on this moment in your community of faith this weekend. The United Church of Christ has gathered a number of worship materials that are pleased to be able to share with you. You can download them here [PDF].
