Remembering story keeper and right relations advocate Okiysimaw Tyrone Tootoosis

In 2015, the All My Relations Network of SK Conference was honoured to have professor and Indigenous leader Winona Wheeler as our lead resource person.  At the time, Winona’s life partner Tyrone Tootoosis was facing cancer and considerable struggles with his health. Winona wrote on 12 February to say “Tyrone left us early this morning, riding a comet during the full snow moon.  We will miss him dearly.  ekosi pitama!”

Tyrone was an activist, teacher, tradition carrier, story keeper, and a bridge builder to settler communities.  This Star Phoenix story and video give a glimpse of what he offered communities of all kinds.

We too will miss him dearly, and we send prayers and good thoughts to Winona, to all the family, the Poundmaker First Nation, and all who loved Tyrone.  Go well, friend and teacher. May we follow the example you showed us.

All our relations.  Kahkiyaw niwahkomâkanak.
